NRCan Canadian Forest Service (CFS) manages two national research forests – the Acadia Research Forest near Fredericton, New Brunswick, and the Petawawa Research Forest near Chalk River, Ontario. Both forests, active since the early 1920s, are dedicated to forestry research. Both are unique in Canada for their concentration of long-term field research studies. The scientific evidence that these studies provide has been validated over decades, and is irreplaceable. The knowledge they will continue to provide for decades to come will inform forest management policies and decisions that by definition have long term implications for Canadian forests.
The Management Advisory Committees will help to celebrate the value of and address the challenges to the research forests by:
The Management Advisory Committees will provide recommendations to the Strategic Advisory Committee of the National Research Forests.
The committee will meet twice a year, or more frequently as required. Meetings will be designed to minimize travel, although field visits to the Forests will be encouraged where possible.
Committee membership and composition will be reviewed periodically as required. Working committees may be struck and other expertise called upon as required to fulfill the mandate of the committee.
Membership consists of representatives from the following organizations:
