Each year about 10 000 people visit the forest; they range from special interest groups to students to the general public. Throughout the year there are many festivals, group excursions, meetings, and leisure activities that are undertaken within the forest.

The Town of Laurentian Hills (formerly the Township Municipality of Rolph, Buchanan, Wylie, and McKay and the Village of Chalk River) has close ties to the PRF through various community-related activities held within the forest. Many of these are coordinated through the community-operated Visitor's Centre.

Did You Know?

The PRF is home to the only two operational forest fire towers remaining in Ontario, the Malone Tower and the Wylie Tower. The 34-m Malone Tower, located at Thomas Lake, has a panoramic view stretching 50 km or more on a clear day. The 27-m Wylie Tower is located 1.5 km from Algonquin Park. When smoke is detected, the crews of each tower report the bearings from their respective sightings and the location is plotted. Forest fire crews are instantly dispatched to the fire location, providing the best possible protection for the millions of dollars invested in the PRF.
